a little background...
My main body of work is mixed media paintings. These fine art pieces have sophisticated elements and a touch of folk art charm. Subjects range from portraits to still life. Paper is a predominate feature, usually newspaper and vintage book pages, giving each piece a unique story to tell. The paper used, unearths a hint of the painting's history. I use a deterioration process that showcases a destructive theme, which ties in choices we make in our life and how that shapes what is seen. The underlying feeling in my body of work is about finding the story behind the subject and the beauty in imperfection.
In my illustration work, I draw classic subjects, usually flora and fauna. I draw from as much real life as I can, I want to be able to smell the aroma of the herbs and touch the soft petals of a fresh bloom. I am very textile and although the illustrations are drawn with simple lines, the feeling and emotion that goes into them, comes from the experience of life and energy of the subject. I keep the work in black and white, which lends an eloquent and understated element. The classic drawing goes well in just about any decor.
I was born and raised in Alabama. As a teenager and young adult, I spent my years in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Now, back home in the south, I work full time as a professional artist. My education is in Graphic Design and I have experience in fine art gallery curation and teaching art, grades k-8.
I am connected to nature and contemplative and you can usually see hints of this in my work. I love painting every day subjects in a non-traditional form.
